The average starting IT salary increased to £25,000 last year, according to a new survey conducted by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR).
In its annual poll, the AGR reveal that salaries are generally holding steady, with the IT sector bucking the trend with a 4.2 per cent rise in median salary.
However, IT was also the second most over-subscribed profession in the survey, with 59 applicants received for every vacancy.
This supports the Higher Education Statistics Agency's recent findings, which disclosed that ten per cent of Computer Science graduates are still unemployed a year after completing their courses.
The AGR survey claimed that employers "believe the answer to the skills and knowledge shortage is to focus on the development of elites rather than on widening graduate participation".
Meanwhile, e-skills UK predicts in its IT and Telecoms Insights 2008 employment forecast, that the IT sector will grow by 2.5 per cent in the next eight years, compared with growth of 0.5 per cent across all sectors.
