The IT services, computer software and hardware sector is one of Ireland's key growth industries.
According to the head of careers at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Dave Kilmartin, people in IT careers are part of a sector which continues to attract investment, the Irish Independent has reported.
Other sectors that could help the country find its way out of recession include accounting and auditing, innovation and intellectual property-related enterprises, green jobs and medical and health
People looking to retrain and start a new programming career could also find opportunities in the business services sector. Mr Kilmartin explained that there has been a "rapid emergence of internationally traded services", which include computer and information businesses.
Many companies are switching to fibre-based broadband connections, according to recent data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
It revealed that by the end of 2008, ten per cent of connections were made with fibre optic cables.
