IT jobs 'could help airlines beat crisis'

15:00 23rd June 2008

The air travel industry is looking to IT jobs to help it emerge from a period of difficulty.

At the Sita Air Transport IT Summit last week, Giovanni Bisignani, director general and chief executive of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said that that cost-cutting measures such as e-ticketing are ways in which IT can benefit airlines and operators.

The aviation industry is undergoing pressures largely generated by rising oil prices. As such, Mr Bisgnani believes enhancing passenger convenience and enhancing possibilities are "critical to survival".

He added that the "IT revolution" could soon be worth $6.5 billion (£3.3 billion) in savings for airlines a year.

Upcoming IT improvements to be introduced by the IATA's Fast Travel scheme include automated document checks and self-boarding.

The IATA, which moved to 100 per cent e-ticketing on June 1st 2008, has 230 members in 126 nations.
