More companies will seek employees with cloud computing expertise next year, according to a new survey.
Research by recruitment firm Modis International revealed that 36 per cent of industry decision-makers believe the role of the IT professional has changed in the last 12 months.
They suggested this development has much to do with cloud computing, which is expected to become more of a mainstream concern in 2012.
As a result, candidates who have boosted their knowledge of cloud systems through IT training could be poised to take advantage.
Managing director of Modis International Jim Albert said cloud services were expected to flourish this year, but the process of integrating them into existing business operations has "taken longer than expected".
He added: "As cloud computing continues to develop, those with relevant skills will find themselves in high demand."
Last month, the Irish Times reported that Dublin-based cloud computing firm Ammeon has created 75 new IT jobs in the Irish capital and Reading.
