IT industry 'must address shortage of female workers'

There is a notable gender imbalance in the IT industry, it has been claimed.

According to recruitment firm Greythorn, males outnumber females in IT jobs by three to one.

The survey, which assessed almost 3,000 IT industry employees, found that although females receive salaries that are equivalent to their male counterparts, they are less likely to rise to senior positions such as IT managers.

Greythorn managing director Richard Fischer said: "IT has always been a heavily male-dominated industry. Everyone in the industry knows it is an issue but very few people have ever tried seriously to address it."

He added that opening up the IT industry to more female employees could be "a positive step" in addressing its skill shortages.

The survey revealed a trend towards more female IT workers, since they now make up a larger proportion of the overall workforce.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) recently labelled IT as one of the "key basic skills" that employees need to secure employment, a fact that could inspire readers to take IT courses.
