IT departments come in from the dark

12:58 29th July 2008

The traditional image of IT departments working away in isolated areas has changed, a new survey across six business sectors has revealed.

IFF Research interviewed senior executives in the fields covered by six sector skills councils, discovering that IT workers are now a central part of the wider workforce and drive future development in sectors such as retail, transport and finance.

The report also identified IT staff as typically creative, world-aware and business-savvy due to the growth of e-commerce.

Ian Wheeler, research manager at Skillsmart Retail, which led the research, emphasised that IT professionals must now be more knowledgeable about business.

He said: "Online trading is now an integral part of many businesses and IT must be woven throughout to make sure they can provide an online presence that fits in with the company's culture, aims and strategies."

In 2007 internet shopping increased by 38 per cent, which is equal to 17p of every retail pound spent.
