IT careers role in future public services

13:45 30th June 2008

A new government report has outlined the role that those in IT careers have in improving the performance of public services.

Entitled Excellence and fairness: Achieving world class public services, the paper highlights the part that advances such as the internet have had in making public services more personalised and precise.

Currently, the state employs 10,000 people in IT careers - as well as chief information officers - on a number of projects aimed at further harnessing the power of technology in improving accessibility.

The example of NHS Direct is given as proof of how the public has changed in the way it interacts with the government. What began as a telephone-based service in 1997 now receives more visits online than it does via calls.

In other government IT news, the British Computer Society is running a competition to see which MP websites are the best in terms of design, engagement and accessibility.
