Few British undergraduates believe that IT careers are adequately promoted to school pupils, according to a new report.
Research launched by the British Computer Society (BCS) revealed that more than 90 per cent of university students were not educated on the benefits of a computing degree.
Mike Rodd, director of BCS Learned Society, commented that A-level study has a role to play in this, with students of ICT and computing more likely to be informed of the advantages of IT careers.
"We need to encourage more students to study computer science and computer related studies at universities in order to ensure that the IT industry can meet the demand for workers in the future," he argued.
The research follows comments from Professor Lachlan MacKinnon, head of the school of computing and creative technologies at the University of Abertay, who told Silicon last week that IT training needs to begin at secondary school level.
