The human brain responds better to stories and therefore finds IT security issues difficult to understand, claims expert Bruce Schneier.
Addressing the Black Hat USA 2009 conference Mr Schneier explained that we are yet to evolve to fully understand threats of this kind.
He said: "We have Stone Age brains."
"We are very good at living in small family groups in the east African highlands, but we do not have a lot of experience in the modern world."
In IT and computing careers workers often need to reassess the level of security protection they have integrated into their equipment.
A common method of protecting computers from viruses is using a firewall, which is designed to block unauthorised content.
Even with such measures in place, we may still never solve the ongoing threat to IT security, Mr Schneier claims.
NHS computers were recently found to contain more than 8,000 viruses, More4 News reported.
