The government is thinking about providing children forced to stay home because of swine flu the opportunity to start virtual learning.
Becta, the government's technology adviser has been consulting with MPs about using the internet and email to keep children studying, the BBC has reported.
According to Becta, contingency plans are in place, although the government has yet to call for schools to close their doors.
"We are not anxious to see schools being closed. Obviously, keeping schools closed would have a deleterious effect on children's education," noted Mark Ward, deputy general of the Association of School and College leavers.
People who change jobs and undertake IT training could find themselves working in programming careers and using their newly found skills to create software.
Virtual learning differs from home schooling, as with the latter pupils are led by their parents rather than by a program or application.
