IT jobs and employment across a range of sectors in Wales has been boosted by support from the Welsh Assembly, it has been claimed.
New figures have revealed the private sector is seeing employment rise at a faster rate than in the public sector, despite the global recession that has hit the jobs market over recent months.
"Despite the problems we continue to face as a result of the global recession and the subsequent fall in employment, these figures are encouraging and demonstrate that since devolution there has been an underlying strengthening of the private sector in Wales," said minister for economy and transport Ieuan Wyn Jones.
He added: "We have already refocused our business support structure to provide businesses with an unparalleled level of practical assistance."
The trend is the converse of that seen across the UK as a whole, where jobs in the private sector have begun to shrink compared to those in the public sector.
IT jobs could be given a major boost by the government's recent Budget announcement, in which the chancellor outlined plans to focus the UK on a digital economy.
Alistair Darling reaffirmed the government's commitment to delivering high-speed broadband services to every home and business in the country by 2012.
