Search engine and internet company Google will soon face a competitor in the lucrative search market if a deal between Yahoo! and Microsoft goes ahead.
The firms had previously been engaged in protracted discussions but failed to reach an agreement, although it is being reported a deal will be announced later today.
'Findability' of websites is often improved by people in web design careers by optimising the sites they build to suit search engines' algorithms.
By uniting, Microsoft will provide social portal Yahoo! with a new search engine, Bing, and Yahoo! will manage the accompanying advertising.
Yahoo!'s chief executive officer Jerry Yang previously turned down a takeover offer from Microsoft of $44.5 billion (£27 billion) and angered some of the company's shareholders, it was reported.
According to the most recent analysis by comScore, Google handles 65 per cent of search enquiries.
