Using computers and online marking for GCSEs has not progressed because people are still worried about the risks involved, claims a computer expert.

Andrew Boyle, a specialist in e-assessment from the regulator Ofqual, told the Guardian electronic marking poses some real problems.

He explained that to handle the examinations from one year group would require two sets of computers and many people are still not convinced it will work.

"I think there is a genuine aversion to risk in this area, within government, within providers of assessment, amongst students, parents and staff," he commented.
