Ecommerce is 'still strong despite recession'

While spending online may have slowed during the downturn, there is still a growing demand for retail sites, says one IT industry expert.

Those searching for web design courses may be interested to hear reports from researchers at eMarketer, which predict nearly half of the UK population will be buying online by 2013.

Over the next four years, the number of internet shoppers is expected to rise from 26.9 million to 31.8 million.

Simon Bird, technical director at digital marketing specialist dotCommerce, said the cost of an ecommerce site compares favourably with that of an actual retail store.

According to Mr Bird, an online presence also offers businesses the opportunity for international coverage.

"There are so many tools out there but companies can now get online and sell their products without having to spend huge amounts of money," he added.

Lower online prices are said to be the primary reason why customers are now turning to ecommerce.

Virtual sales are consistently outstripping those on the high street, noted Mr Bird.
