IT support roles are increasingly required in the UK, new research has found.
According to a study conducted by ReThink Recruitment, the demand for IT support jobs has risen by 20 per cent since 2006.
The findings indicated that such roles now make up 30 per cent of all advertised IT positions, compared to 24 per cent two years ago.
This is despite the growing availability of offshore IT support centres.
ReThink noted that support roles are often left unfilled for substantial periods of time because there are not enough graduates suitable for entry level positions. The recruitment firms also said that low wages were partly to blame.
Commenting on the findings, ReThink managing director Jon Butterfield said that rising wages in places such as India have made the UK a more attractive location or support centres.
He explained: "Offshoring has made organisations' IT functions more efficient, which has freed budgets for investment elsewhere. These new projects require support teams, and it's not always appropriate or advantageous to base these staff offshore."
