Continued demand for IT and computer technology could push the UK market to be worth £50 billion, new research suggests.
Market research firm Mintel has reported sales of high-tech goods increased 13 per cent in the four years to 2008 and the market is defying the ongoing recession.
British people's love for technology is partly fuelling the growth - the study found 38 per cent of respondents would sacrifice a night out to save for a new electronic gadget.
Jim Clark, senior technology analyst at Mintel noted that 41 per cent of adult internet users are going out less than they did a year ago.
"This will impact on demand for home technology as consumers look to the living room for their entertainment needs," he concluded.
With Mintel forecasting the technology market to return sales of £60 billion by 2014, moving into computing careers could be a wise decision.
US computer manufacturer Apple has recently announced sales of its iPhone reached 5.2 million in the three months to June 26th.
