'Computer workers should retrain'

Workers in the computer industry should retrain ready for the economic recovery, the deputy editor of a leading UK publications says.

Susan Chapman at ComputerworldUK.com has advised it is not only people from other jobs that might need to retrain if they want to make the most of job opportunities.

Ms Chapman notes that firms will be looking to make the most of new technologies, such as cloud computing, software-as-a-service and virtualisation.

"Now is the time to increase your understanding and skill set around these emerging technologies and understand where they can give businesses a competitive advantage," she says.

IT managers should also take steps to increase their profiles to make themselves more employable, she added.

Also, by creating a blog, making contacts in the media and public speaking they could reposition themselves as "thought leaders" and help themselves secure new IT careers.

According to Micro Focus, an enterprise application management and modernisation solutions provider, home-grown technology firms should contribute more to the UK's gross domestic product in the next ten years.ADNFCR-1667-ID-19306876-ADNFCR
