Computer users and workers in IT careers are invited to cut power usage as part of Power IT Down Day on August 27th.
The initiative is to raise awareness of how much power is wasted when computer users leave their PCs, printers and monitors on.
According to event organisers, it is possible to save an average of 13 kilowatt hours of electricity per person per evening.
The event is sponsored by Citrix, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Intel and Microsoft, who are encouraging computer users to register their commitment.
Once the companies have established how many people have taken part they will calculate the savings and donate a portion of them to the services charity the Wounded Warrior Project.
HP says: "Do it for the environment. Do it for the next generation. But first do it just for one day."
The US government advises computer users to turn off their monitors if they are idle for more than 20 minutes and their PCs if they will not be used for two hours.
