Subsea UK, the company which represents the subsea industry in Britain, has called for better training opportunities for the manufacturing and engineering sectors.
The organisation has advocated changes to the existing system, which offers conflicting training routes and a variety of different pathways that are not always compatible with each other.
It says efforts should be made to produce more focus and provide distinct pathways ready to be explored by employers and those considering a career change within engineering or the manufacturing industries.
Alistair Birnie, chief executive of Subsea UK, said: "If the UK is to keep its place at the head of the global pack, greater alignment of skills and competency must start now so that it is much clearer to those both already in and new to the industry how to maximise their career opportunities."
He added that many companies are already striving for more effective programmes, but they need the support of organisations such as City and Guilds to be successful.
In related news, unemployed Londoners are to set to benefit from £23 million of funding for training programmes designed to help them find work.
