Apple Macintosh users will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of Microsoft's Outlook software.
As part of the new Office for Mac bundle, Microsoft will for the first time include Outlook, its powerful email and groupware software.
Currently, Mac users have difficulty if their work computer runs Outlook and their personal computer - when it is an Apple - does not, as current Mac email clients do not synchronise or integrate well.
Apple's most recent attempt at an email, calendar and organiser Entourage, will be replaced in the move, which will bring Apple and PC users closer together.
Eric Wilfrid, general manager for the Macintosh Business Unit at Microsoft, said: "Outlook for Mac will bring features our customers have long requested - such as Information Rights Management - that make working across platforms even easier. I think people will see that this move to Outlook for Mac is more than just a name change."
Sometimes favoured by workers in creative industries, such as people in web design careers, Macs are known for their stable operating systems and graphical user interfaces (GUI), which allow a great deal of freedom when organising files and folders.
The two competitors have become more similar of late, with Microsoft improving its GUI and Apple using Intel processors that allow both operating systems to be run in parallel.
