Young consumers are expected to drive demand in the smartbook market, according to an industry expert.
"Smartbooks are well suited for a younger, school-age demographic because they have all grown up surrounded by technology and they need something that can keep up with their hectic lives at a low price point," said Franck Nicholls of Freescale.
Mr Nicholls added that the internet-enabled devices are ideal to this age group because they are "intuitive, trendy, and powerful devices".
His views follow an earlier analysis by Strategy Analytics predicting that mobile broadband subscriptions will rocket from 300 million in 2009 to 1.3 billion by the end of 2014 via devices like smartbooks.
In other news, the sales of ebooks will increase this year as makers start marketing their products outside of the US, the main market for such devices, an expert has said.
Stuart Miles, owner and editor of the independent consumer electronics news and reviews website, said that ebook reader sales should double this year as many new players enter the market and established manufacturers begin to sell outside the US.
