Reports suggesting Google is in talks with several film studios about offering a rental service through its video streaming site have been welcomed by one movie industry expert.
Commenting on the news, Nick Mason Pearson, director of press and public affairs at the British Film Institute, said the move would be good news for the public and could help to tackle video piracy.
"People want to see films in so many different ways and on different platforms. Being able to access them in a way that they are comfortable with and trust makes that [process] so much easier," he added.
If such a partnership goes ahead, Google would be in direct competition with rival computing giant Apple, which launched its own download rental service in December last year.
Broadcast networks in the UK, meanwhile, are struggling to develop a cost effective business model to deliver online content.
A Competition Commission ruling earlier this year quashed the hopes of ITV, Channel 4 and BBC Worldwide when it ruled against an on demand collaboration between the organisations.
