15:44 5th March 2010

The Indian group that has won the rights to supply the event management software for this summer's football World Cup in South Africa has expressed its confidence that the system will run smoothly.

"We have tested the software by using it at 14 other FIFA events," said Dilbagh Gill of Indian software developer Mahindra Satyam.

He added that up to 120 people had worked on the project for the last three years and there would be 160 people working during the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

The company will complete the software on 31 March and will begin integration testing in the middle of April.

In other news, the British Library is using new software from IBM called BigSheets to preserve terabytes of information from websites that otherise would be lost to future generations.

The web archiving technology is preserving information on significant events such as the credit crunch and the 2010 General Election for future study and research.
