Employees sharing information through social networking sites and email is a major concern for businesses keen to protect sensitive information, says a security expert.
Nicki Wallace, global solutions marketing manager at information management firm RSA, said members of sites such as Facebook and Twitter may not even be aware they are sharing corporate data.
Media losses through email are inevitable unless encryption controls are put in place by a member of staff with IT training, she added.
Her comments are supported by recently released research, which found accidental security incidents happen more often and can prove to be more damaging, than malicious insider attacks.
Sponsored by RSA and conducted by market researcher IDC, the study found the majority of IT specialists were unsure about how to identify internal risks and quantify their impact.
When asked to rank their top threats almost 82 per cent of those surveyed were unsure if incidents were accidental or deliberate.
