Knowledge transfer network Grid Computing Now! forms part of a government funded initiative and has announced the results of its latest competition, reports the British Computer Society (BCS).

The grid computing for a greener planet competition was divided into professional and non-professional categories to recognise innovative IT solutions.

Christos Melissidis, an MSc student, came first in the non-professional category for his virtual ecosystem.

IT consultant and PhD student Nick Pringle won the professional category for his predictive traffic flow model.

Ian Osborne, Grid Computing Now! director, commented: "Over the past year we have seen tremendous growth in the number and scope of grid computing solutions available. The winners of this competition have demonstrated the immense potential for grid computing to help solve or monitor environmental issues."

Bob Harvey, chair of the BCS Carbon Footprint Working Group, added that the hard work of IT students and professionals from the IT sector, all working to develop innovative solutions to help cut carbon output, is a great joy to witness.

Grid Computing Now! launched the competition in June 2008.
