The release of Windows Phone 7 Series for mobile phones is a huge step forward for Microsoft, according to Pete Cunningham of research firm Canalys.
"Microsoft have really struggled with windows mobile 6 and 6.5 and have been losing market share off the back of it," he was quoted as saying in the BBC News.
Mr Cunningham added however that the web giant should not "rest on its laurels", since its competitors "haven't revealed their hands".
Microsoft's latest version of its mobile phone operating system is designed around a series of so-called "live tiles", which pull in real time content from users' web sites and social media.
In other news, Microsoft's latest security update for Windows is expected to tackle a bug that dates from the time of the DOS operating system.
The 17-year old loophole will be patched in the company's February update, which will also fix a further 25 holes in Windows, five of which are described as "critical."
