The introduction of wireless internet is a positive development for the IT industry as it offers web-users a cost-effective and sophisticated service, says one computing expert.
John Dunn, editor of Techworld, said Wi-Fi has "transformed the home network market" in the last five years following improvements in broadband speed.
"Its a winner because its mature, cheap and is used by PCs the world over," he added.
However, Mr Dunn noted the technology still has some drawbacks including power drain and a relatively short range.
New Wimax capability could encourage even wider WI-Fi access, according to Mr Dunn, as it helps to transmit data over longer distances.
Projections from technology specialist ABI Research suggest Wi-Fi chipsets shipments are set to reach one billion in 2011 alone.
Smartphones, laptops and consumer electronics devices including portable media players, televisions and cameras will become increasingly popular say researchers.
