Wi-Fi has revolutionised users' lives by enabling them to "access information anwhere, anytime", according to Chris Davies, general manager for the UK and Ireland for networking solutions maker D-Link.
"Without Wi-Fi, there would not be the boom in mobile internet devices that there is today and user demand for the next-generation of mobile devices, such as the iPad," he added.
His comments came as May 24th 2010 Wi-Fi marked the 25th anniversary of Wi-Fi's creation when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved unlicensed access to the radio spectrum for communications.
FCC's decision led to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers launching the 802.11 standard for wireless networking in 1997, which is the standard that Wi-Fi runs off.
Recent figures by the Wi-Fi Alliance found that 74 per cent of people were keen to use Wi-Fi to watch films or television on any screen in their home. More than 475 million Wi-Fi chipsets were shipped in 2009.
