The internet has benefitted independent record companies despite the threat of illegal file-sharing, a spokesperson for Record of the Day has said.
"The more creative independent labels have found ways to harness other aspects of the internet apart from P2P [Peer-to-Peer], which has been to their advantage," she explained.
According to the Record of the Day spokesperson, indy labels now have the option to use online platforms such as video-sharing websites to publicise their artists "without having to go through the old gatekeepers of the media".
However, she noted that it is difficult for such companies "to take full advantage of that situation" as they often don't have the resources to do so.
Her comments come as Martin Mills, chairman and founder of record label Beggars Group, told the Register that the web has revitalised interest in new music and allowed independent companies to circumvent traditional intermediaries to promote it.
