Virtual reality, usually a topic of science fiction books, is set to become mainstream next year, according to an expert.
Technology like the one used by social network Brightkite that allows users to find friends in their area by switching on the camera on their mobile phone and pointing it around them will be common place.
"I'm surprised we haven't got there yet. But it makes a lot of sense if a friend is a street away then you can meet up for coffee," futurologist Ian Pearson was quoted as saying by the BBC.
"Instead of seeing people as they are you might well be able to see their Facebook profiles appearing as bubbles above them," Mr Pearson added.
In other news, Twitter, the microblogging site, is set to become profitable at the end of this year, according to several news reports.
Media reports have recently said that the site is going to end 2009 with revenue of around $25 (£15.63) million and operating costs of between $20 (£12.5) and $25 (£15.63) million.
