Virgin's offer of 400Mbps broadband 'could be smoke and mirrors'

Reports that Virgin would be offering 400Mbps broadband "would just be giving out their eggs too soon," according to Edd Dawson, the managing director of broadband.co.uk.

He said that while Virgin can sell 50mbps - the fastest in the country - at the moment there's no point providing higher speed because there's not that much users can do with all that extra capacity.

However, he said, Virgin will "always make sure they stay ahead". The use of broadband is a topic that could be taught in IT courses.

His comments emerged after a report by ZDNET UK revealed in an exclusive interview with an unnamed Virgin worker that the ISP had been building out its broadband capacity and had equipment capable of supporting speeds of that rate.

Mr Dawson went on to say that competition was the main factor for companies to decide when a speed like this could be coming to the consumer.
