Google has patented new technology to search for under-reported news online, but there are other ways to do so.
There is no one single way of identifying trendy subjects on the internet, according to Desire Athow, the editor of ITProPortal.com.
"There are numerous other ways of 'guessing' what's hot. Google's own Trends solution, Google news, Bing Trends, Twitter et cetera. Indeed, the data that Google might provide would only make sense for featured content," Mr Athow said.
His comments emerged as a report by the Financial Times said the giant search engine has filed a patent in the US for its own technology to identify under-represented content online.
Mr Athow said that Google's new technology to spot under-reported information would have the same impact on news as Gmail did on web-based email.
Separately, news publications like the Times and the Financial Times have started charging for their online content by erecting so-called paywalls around their websites. However, a recent survey by Harris Interactive revealed that only 23 per cent of Times users are willing to consider paying for content.
