The use of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) by UK businesses is set to sky-rocket, reports the British Computing Society.
A survey by the National Computing Centre has shown that a growing number of firms have either investigated the possibility of implementing VDI or have set the wheels in motion to install the system.
The current economic malaise has prompted many businesses in the UK to re-examine their IT facilities and look for areas in which they may be able to increase efficiency and make savings.
Michael Dean, group marketing manager of the National Computing Centre, told the website: "Many organisations will use the current situation as an opportunity to make significant changes if they can see cost-saving opportunities."
He added that other innovations in desktop technology such as software-as-a-service and desktop-as-a-service are also set to grow in popularity over the next year.
VDI enables system administrators and end-users to both use a PC while completing their separate tasks of managing data centres and carrying out the normal functions of a PC.
