Utility computing is the phrase on the lips of the global IT industry at present, according to one expert.
Dan Scarfe, Dot Net Solutions' chief executive, suggested that because cloud computing offers an easier and cheaper method of preparing IT infrastructure to deal with an upsurge in usage, it is starting to attract a number of retailers and banks.
"Utility computing is the general buzzword in the industry, which is about specking-out for that peak requirement that you might hit once in a blue moon," he remarked.
Mr Scarfe made his comments in light of Microsoft's unveiling of Windows Azure last month.
The product is designed to offer scalable networking, storage and hosting services to businesses.
Discussing the scale of the cloud, Dot Net claimed that Microsoft is purchasing 10,000 new servers a month for it.
In order to illustrate this size, it pointed out that Facebook only runs on 10,000 servers in total.
