Use of IT industry developments 'can cut carbon footprints'

Companies can invest in the latest IT industry developments as a way to curtail their carbon footprint, Ronan Dunne, chief executive of mobile operator O2 told the Financial Times.

"Investing in things like the smart meters has helped us [reduce our carbon emissions], and we've done that in our retail estate as well as on our network, delete extra space" Mr Dunne told the publication.

"Over 90 per cent of our carbon footprint comes from electricity consumption, so that's where our focus is. And that is facilitated by smart metering so that we can get a handle on what we are using," he added.

He went on to say that data centre energy consumption is a key aspect of his industry that contributes to the pollution of the environment.

He said the amount of traffic network providers carry and their transactions is growing all the time.

His comments emerged as the company was recently recognised by the Carbon Trust for cutting its CO2 emissions.
