US admits more needs to be done in cyber security

15:45 5th March 2010

The US government has said that more needs to be done to protect Americans from cyber attacks.

Speaking at the world's biggest security conference in San Francisco, homeland security secretary Janet Napolitano said the government was working with a "sense of urgency" and that the department of homeland security "stands at a very important juncture."

"We need to do more and we need to do it faster," she added.

Ms Napolitano went on to name a number of efforts the government is making towards a more strategic approach to the issue, including a technology called Einstein to try and prevent attacks on federal networks before they happen.

In other news, a phishing campaign is targeting Twitter users to steal their passwords and hijack accounts, according to security firm Sophos.

The hijacked accounts are being used to spread money-making spam campaigns. Phishing links started to appear in humorous postings that began with internet phrases like "lol, this is funny" and "lol this you??"
