UK firms ignoring data risks

UK Businesses are ignoring the risk of security breaches and have a lack of awareness about how to manage data, a new survey has revealed.

The business services firm Logica has released a study which discloses that only a minority of firms educate staff on how to cope with data breaches, or even how to handle information in the first place.

In addition, Logica revealed that 60 per cent of the firms surveyed, which had experienced a data breach, did not tell their clients, while half failed to tell the police or relevant authorities.

Tim Best, director of enterprise security solutions at Logica, stressed that data losses can put customers at risk and lead to a loss of business.

He said: "With some organisations failing to disclose security breaches, this complacent attitude not only increases the likelihood of financial and reputational consequences, but highlights inadequate security policies and protocols at UK organisations."

Earlier this month, a government-backed research project was launched which aims to boost privacy and stem the flow of personal information on the internet.
