Top executives' reliance on 'gut feel' hits business

19:17 9th February 2010

Senior executives fail to do best business because they rely heavily on "gut feel" and lack the ability to analyse business data, according to a new survey of 600 top executives at large organisations.

Dave Rich, managing director at Accenture's analytics division, warned that companies that "fail to tackle the issues around data, technology and analytics talent will lose out to the high-performing 10 ten per cent who have leveraged predictive analytics to become more agile and adaptive, and gain competitive advantage."

According to the Accenture survey, more than 50 per cent of large companies are not structured in a way that supports data analytics to lead the group's strategy.

In other news, one in five businesses will move to scrap their IT infrastructure in 2010, a market expert has predicted.

Steve Prentice, vice-president of Gartner, explained that the move will not involve "large businesses with data centres, but small and medium companies and start-ups. Why build a data centre when you could have access to someone else's?"
