The selection of the right IT system will be essential to ensure businesses comply with energy efficiency initiatives, according to Sonny Masero, vice-president of ecoSoftware.
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment) is a new regulatory incentive to improve energy efficiency in large public and private sector organisations.
The scheme, which is obligatory, aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in the UK.
Mr Masero said: "Effective data management is important for this legislation because company reports could be audited and therefore data quality and the supporting evidence is crucial to avoid fines and criticism for non-compliance."
He went on to say that the use of a centralised management system rather than spreadsheets, emails and word documents could minimise errors.
The way IT systems work is a topic that could be taught in IT training.
