The potential importance of the internet as a tool for educating and informing children should not be underestimated, according to the Children's Society.
Tim Linehan, director of campaigns and media for the organisation, said that the web offers a huge number of opportunities to aid children's everyday learning and that it would be a mistake to disregard it as an educational tool.
He acknowledged that there were dangers to be faced but the image of the internet as a dark and malevolent force was untrue and would work against society in the end.
Mr Linehan said: "It's completely counter-productive and wrong to say that this is a bad thing that we need to control. Children learn huge amounts on using the web, but there are risks that need to be managed."
Parents could take IT training courses to further their own understanding of the web and to enable them to help their children with home learning.
Teenagers spend around 30 hours a week on the internet, according to new research from Cyber Sentinel.
