14:25 14th December 2009

The telecommunications industry in the UK and around the globe can expect to enjoy a boom during 2010, according to new research.

A study carried out by Informa Telecoms and Media has predicted that the telecoms market will surge, driven by the increasing demand for broadband services, while in the UK, the government's commitment to roll out faster internet services across the country will also help grow the sector.

According to the research, the market will see revenues increase to £35 billion in 2010, with 32 per cent of revenue generated in Western Europe.

Paul Merry, senior analyst at Informa Telecoms and Media added that "mobile enterprise services are experiencing a marked increase in importance".

Meanwhile, a survey carried out by industry watchdog Ofcom revealed around half of firms in the UK are planning to spend more on telecoms services in the next year.

Two thirds see it as a vital way of transforming their operation, the report found, demonstrating the increasing reliance on the IT industry to help increase businesses' success.
