The technology sector could become the main driver of the UK economy over the next few years, according to Intellect, the trade association for IT companies.
"Britain has the environment to build tomorrow's world-leading technology businesses today. If we fail to capitalise on this, we deserve no sympathy for losing out on future growth," the association said in its manifesto.
Intellect called for corporate tax breaks and financial incentives to encourage the sector's growth and create 250,000 jobs over the next decade.
Its manifesto has identified several areas to benefit from the industry's potential, including entrepreneurship, academic connection with industry and delivery of the digital infrastructure.
In other news, the UK public IT sector is underperforming and is much more costly than in other similar countries, a new report has warned.
The "Government IT: The way forward" report, conducted by specialist IT supplier Erudine, urges officials to replace intricate service level deals and long-term supplier contracts with running standard IT infrastructure on the cloud, which could be shared across the government.
