One of the world's leading computer scientists has said the situation concerning women in the tech sector has deteriorated in the last two decades, according to a news report.
Dame Wendy Hall, who is a professor at Southampton University and part of the group working on the new £30 million Institute of Web Science, described the sector's gender imbalance as "depressing".
"I wrote my first paper in 1987 on the lack of women - that's 23 years ago. If anything I would say in this country it's probably got worse. It certainly hasn't got any better", she was quoted as saying by Computer Weekly.
According to the publication, women now represent about one in five workers in the UK technology sector.
In related news, David Braben, founder of Frontier Developments, has said the number of computer science graduates in the UK has slumped by 52 per cent since 2001; "a staggering drop".
