Tablet computer market 'still open to iPad rivals'

Tablet computer market 'still open to iPad rivals'

The much-anticipated second generation of Apple's iPad is expected to be on sale as early as next month, according to Dan Grabham, deputy editor of TechRadar.com.

The expert predicted that "the second generation iPad will really lay down the gauntlet to rivals".

However, as news of the new iPad populated the web, the expert said there are still opportunities for other rivals to enter the market for tablet computers.

Motorola Xoom are examples of the type of products that might take some market away from Apple.

Meanwhile, he said tablet computers like the iPad or the Playbook could soon push e-readers out of the market because of their increasing complexity and power.

He explained that many devices like the iPad are able to offer some of the same functions as e-readers among a range of other features.

Apple's release of the iPad 2 comes as healthy growth for both media tablets and e-readers was recorded in the last three months of last year by the IDC's latest worldwide quarterly media tracker for tablet and e-readers.
