T training news: Internet traffic management 'controversial'

06:18 13th October 2010

Managing internet traffic remains 'a controversial approach', according to Mark Jackson, editor of ISPreview.co.uk.

"Content is what makes the internet what it is and without that the attraction of going online would be far less," Mr Jackson said.

He was commenting on a technique used by network operators and internet service providers (ISPs) to stem or accelerate the flow of traffic.

In other IT industry news, media regulator Ofcom said earlier this month it would set out a new regulatory framework for superfast broadband, demanding that BT open up its network to rivals including BSkyB and TalkTalk.

Ofcom said the new regulatory framework is designed to stimulate promotion and investment in superfast broadband across the UK.

The average speed of mobile broadband in the UK is currently just over one megabit per second, according to research by broadband comparison website Broadbandgenie.co.uk.

The research found Orange to offer the lowest average mobile broadband speed, clocking in at 0.86 megabit per second. T-Mobile and Vodaphone had the highest average speeds at around 1.2 megabit per second.
