T-Mobile UK and 3 UK have unveiled plans to complete their joint network infrastructure programme by the end of this year, in a move that will see the group's 3G network reach 98 per cent outdoor coverage across the country.
The companies, which have awarded a £400 million contract to the Mobile Broadband Network to help provide infrastructure and planning for the upgrade, say that after its finalisation, the network will be the largest in Europe and will offer smartphone and dongle customers the biggest 3G coverage in the UK.
Stephane Teral, principal analyst for mobile and fixed-mobile convergence infrastructure at Infonetics Research, said that a motivation for the upgrade is that telecom groups "want to migrate as many existing 2G/2.5G subscribers to 3G. Consequently, [they] need to provide them with the same coverage as that of 2G/2.5G."
At the end of January, 3 UK completed the site installation of its 10,000th 3G site in a location in south-east London.
