A growth in demand for virtualisation technology is propelling the IT industry through the recession as businesses look for new ways to cut costs, it has been suggested.
A recent survey carried out by Centrify found that the number of organisations with the majority of their servers virtualised will double over the next 18 months to 51 per cent of all data centres.
Tony Lock, programme director at IT analysis and research organisation Freeform Dynamics, explained: "Clearly, the biggest driver so far has been cost savings, but that's just step one on the curve."
He continued: "The biggest potential advancement in server virtualisation is to do with actually being able to allocate resources much better in line with demand and make big savings as a result."
The huge increase in demand for virtualisation technology is set to have a significant impact on the IT industry over the coming months and many people in the sector may be keen to undertake IT training courses to help boost their knowledge of virtualised servers.
