Next-generation broadband funding should initially be focused on towns and cities, according to Madeline Bennett, editor at V3.co.uk, the technology news and reviews website.
"It is more important to focus on making sure that across the urban areas, initially, there are very high-speed networks," Ms Bennett said.
She explained that, ideally, the entire country should be able to have super fast internet access but the first funds should be concentrated on urban areas.
Her comments came after a new poll said that 75 per cent of V3.co.uk's readers did not agree with the government's plan to introduce a tax on landlines in order to pay for boosting rural broadband access.
Ms Bennett said that it is important to find funds in the long-term for improving rural access, adding, however, that investment on isolated areas should only be made if there is a "genuine business case for it", where both businesses and consumers could benefit from it.
