Streaming 'will overtake downloads'

Offering access to the music streaming service Spotify through smartphones could see such services becoming the most popular method for listening to music, says an IT industry expert.

Simon Barker, editor of gadgets and technology blog Zath.co.uk, said that there is "a very good chance" music streaming services will ultimately overtake the purchasing of individual songs to become the primary way consumers get hold of music.

The Spotify app will now be available for use on the iPhone, iPod touch, and Android smartphones following an announcement earlier this week (September 7th).

Free to the service's premium subscribers in the UK and a handful of other European countries, the app allows them to enjoy music previously available only on the desktop, wherever they go.

Responding to the news, Mr Barker said: "Spotify has a great service, which is currently leading the way" but warned Apple could "end up being more successful" as it could "quickly and easily roll out a similar service in an iTunes and iPhone update".
