Botnet shutdowns have not managed to tackle effectively the increase in webspam, according to the latest data from Google's worldwide analytics.
The web giant has reported that the levels of webspam have remained flat and, in some cases, have even increased, despite the high profile shutdowns of several botnets - groups of hijacked computers which distribute spam - including Mariposa and Mega-D.
Jerome Smith, course manager at web security firm 7Safe, explained that: "The problem is that the fundamental technology for sending email isnt secure in terms of authentication that is, how can I be sure that this email really is from company ABC?"
He added that the amounts of email spam are not going to decrease due to the medium's cheap and simple nature.
Earlier this month, a report by Symantec on web security revealed that, as of March 2010, webspam constitutes 89.34 per cent of all email across the world.
